I'm sure they are triggered to grow and bloom, by such things as
temperature, daylight length etc, just as Chooks don't start laying
until the days start to get longer.
It's not just a trip 1/2 way round the world, that results in the need
to readjust their biological clocks. Irises from northern NSW take time
to adjust here, and even some of Barry Blyths from southern Victoria,
have taken time to settle in.
We have moved horses from Queensland (a much warmer climate than here)
and had them grow a winter coat in summer!
On a more topical note, we have just changed to daylight savings in
Victoria, which involves turning the clock forward by 1 hour. The first
day, Geoff's favourite cat was surprised to see him home from work, 1
hour early, but by the next day, he had adjusted his cat clock, and was
waiting in the driveway, right on time. Friends cats and dogs have made
the adjustment just as quickly.
Food for thought! - Cheers, Jan Clark, in Australia
