Another interesting soil amendment that should be freely available to you,
John I. Jones,  is grape pumice.  This is what's left when grapes are
processed for wine or grape juice.  A local hosta hybridizer and grower uses
this material in all his beds and it's amazing to see him reach into the soil
(since we specialize in clay).

Grape pumice is made up of the grape skins... wonderful organic material...
and the seeds which lighten the soil further.  

I've been trying to get this hosta dude to offer a truckload of the stuff as a
fund raiser, but he's not biting so far.
