Hi Michael,
I was at chat last night and must have missed the chat about the Iris
Shoehorn. You are right, they are used by Iris Maniacs like myself who
have very tiny gardens and many, many rhizomes to plant. Basically, they
are used to wedge rhizomes into any patch of bare ground you can find
with your naked eye. You can get them from the better garden stores,
usually in the hardware section. They come in a short handled (usually
wood) model and a long handled model which is nice for people like me
who have trouble stooping to low levels. I have been working on a
gas-powered version to maximize planting space and time but at the
moment my only prototype is being loaned out to another crazed irisarian
who is STILL planting irises.
There are other tools available that work in a similar fashion. There is
the Iris Pile-driver that rams a three inch rhizome into a one inch
space between other rhizomes. But some models have too much horse power
and have shot the rhizomes straight through the earth and on to
Australia where Anne Pearce, Paul Tyerman and Jan Clark are waiting to
catch them as they pop through on their end (much to the consternation
of the Aussie Customs Agents).
