There's another old hybridizers' trick that is even more effective.  

Remove a style arm from an uncrossed flower.  Doesn't have to be the same
clone.   Doesn't even have to be fresh enough to cross onto.  Snip off the
stigmatic lip just behind the style crest.  This creates a "dauber" with a
moist end the right size and shape to apply to the stigmatic lip to be
fertilized.  You may have to squeeze it a bit to promote the flow of juice.

Even this won't salvage a flower that's several days old, but if it's just
past peak it will do the trick.
