Unfortunately, HOT and DRY is an apt description of our "normal" situation
in TB season, so a flower is typically receptive for only an hour or so.
The advantage of using a sacrificial flower is that it does NOT have to be
fresh enough to cross. I've even used style arms from rapidly folding
flowers or buds that were too frost damaged to fully open. Snipping off
the style crest and stigmatic lip releases juices from deep in the style
arm.
