Bill, I think your concern is well founded, and I think the subject is already
addressed in list policy number 6:

 6) On-List/Off-List. CHECK the recipient line before you send. If
it says "iris-talk@onelist.com" the posting will go to each and every
subscriber on the list. Often, this is what you want. But if the
message is personal, off-topic, or of very limited interest, it
should probably be sent to one (or a few) particular recipients,
 off-list.

I think it is certainly appropriate to offer iris to others using the list,
but two things would help keep down the volume of message traffic in reply to
those messages. Ones that are obviously not of general interest.

First: when you post an offer (or a request for information not of general
interest), remember to ask folks to reply to you privately (thank you Kathy),
and give your email address to make it easy for others to reply, and:

Second: Those replying should try to be considerate of the rest of the
subscribers to the list and be sure to send their responses off list.

I know that I am a more "hands on" administrator than Tom was. Just a
difference in style, but it is important to me to try and keep the amount of
off-topic or limited (or no) interest posts down to a dull roar. We can still
be a family, and at the same time keep more of the family members active on
the list by being considerate of what we post. IMO we have lost too many
valuable resources because the volume of message traffic gets too much for
them. Not all of them post very often, but when we need their expertise it
sure is nice to have them around.

If we all try to follow the guidelines, the issue for me goes away. Then I
don't have to do anything. That makes me very happy, particularily since I
just started a new job with a startup company and have next to no time for
anything else for a while.

Probably does not mean that the dragon is not going to be watching, just that
he is likely to be a bit more grumpy...

Anyone want to volunteer to be a co-moderator??? (Reply off list please - see
address below)
