AIS: Board Meeting III

From: Irisborer@aol.com

Say "uncle"

Just kidding... and I'm just getting warmed up.

I'll try to confine this report to things of general interest... although
truth be told, I think most of it's interesting (which probably falls under
the "get a life" category.

Those folks who have regularly purchased from the Storefront (in the AIS
Bulletin) are certainly thrilled at the job Irv and Nancy Pocklington have
been doing. One interesting thing that's in the storefront are back issues of
the AIS Bulletin. You can buy the specific ones you want.... or get packs of
10 (their choice) for handing out at shows and sales. If I may make a
recommendation.... one issue that I think is timeless is #297A - the
Anniversary Issue. This was in honor of the 75th Anniversary of AIS and is
full of historical information that I found fascinating. I know they have
these in stock and it's a good one. These are priced at $4.50 each pp. The
others are available for $5/10... but the downside is that it's their choice.
Those can be ordered through Paul Gossett in Tulsa.

The Basic Iris Culture book is in short supply,,, or at least to the point
where it needs a reprint - so Roy Epperson has agreed to take it on and update
it at the same time. All of this, of course, comes with a price... but it's
such a popular item it's important that it be done right.

The convention report was offered and there has really not been any change -
but for those who don't know, the following is the schedule of convention
cities for the next few years:

1999	Oklahoma City, OK
2000	Dallas, TX
2001	York, PA
2002	Memphis, TN

The Oklahoma Convention is set in stone, of course. Dates are 5/4 through 5/8
(but the Board meeting will begin on Monday, 5/3). Registration is $120 pp
and the hotel is only $60/day. If you've never been to a convention, it's a
GRRRRREAT time! If you're interested in the meetings, you can come on
Monday.... if not, you can come for the tours and the banquet. Each year more
and more e-mail folks attend these things and now they've set aside special
time just for us. It's a fun way to put faces with names (with special "geek"
tags provided), and enjoy our favorite flower at the same time.

One of the most important things that happened at this meeting is a change in
the President. David Niswonger, having served his three years, completed his
term and the President-elect was installed. Immediately thereafter, an
election was held for the rest of the officers - most of whom I already
mentioned. The line-up is:

President:	Clarence Mahan
1st VP Terry Aitken (also editor of the Bulletin and owner of Aitken's Salmon
Creek Garden)
2nd VP Jeanne Plank (formerly Secretary)
Secretary:	Ruth Simmons
Treasurer:	Jay Hudson
Editor: Terry

It's interesting that EVERY one of these folks is on e-mail, although not a
member of Iris Talk.

A new Administrative Office was created to field complaints and concerns of
the membership: Ombudsman and the first holder of that office is Lew Begley.

The President then announced his appointments for Committee Chairman... and
I'll star the ones who I know have an e-mail address. I think this
information is important because it represents a progressive and connected
leadership - and it also means a willingness to explore electronic avenues for
conducting AIS business (and I have exciting news about THAT).

Anyway, officers are:

Affiliate Chair: Shirley Pope
Convention Liaison: Paul Gossett
Exhibitions: E. Roy Epperson *
Judges Training: Ron Mullin
Library: Keith McNames (to be connected)
Membership Contest: Lynda Miller
Policy: Mike Lowe *
Public Relations: Kathy Guest *
Registrations: Keith Keppel
RVP Counselor: Mike Moller *
Scientific: Chandler Fulton
Section Liaison: Reilly Probst
Silent Auction: Barbara Figge
Slides: Hooker Nichols *
Ways and Means: Maxine Perkins
Youth: Jean Morris

Now... there may be others connected, but these I know.

One more posting on the Board report and then I'll fold my tent.
