Hi Sterling,
Fancy Woman is supposed to be extremely pollen fertile. I couldn't get
pollen from it this season, and the anthers looked as if they had
already dried up when the flowers opened. We had seesawing weather going
from very hot and dry, to wet, to extremely severe frosts. Eventually I
prised open a bud, and found what looked like useable pollen, and may
have set one pod from it. Many anthers on other plants have been
swelling up with wet pollen grains, before they open, so are useless.
Also dry stigmas have been a problem, so I've been using the 'spit'
method, and think I finally have some takes.
Hybridising seems to have finished here for the year. I have gone from
having a firm resolve to stick to my plan, to a 'this will go nicely
with this' method, to 'what looks half decent and has pollen' just for
the sake of something to grow!
With rain iminent, I covered IN HEAVEN (a tiny apricot DB) but forgot
about the pollen parent. This morning the only dry pollen on 'anything
1/2 decent' was LEDA'S LOVER. Might give some interesting IB's.
Jan Clark, enjoying heavy rains in Australia.
