I think I may have been the one that suggested iris fertility (pod and
pollen) varies from year to year. I posed a question to the list as to
why I thought I observed varied fertility but got no answers.
A couple of good examples are Bedford Lilac, a beautiful blue SDB with a
blue beard and our most recent DM winner, Conjuration.
In past years Bedford Lilac put out copious pollen except for this past
spring. This year, nearly all the anthers were nearly void of pollen,
maybe just a few grains if I was lucky.
Conjuration, on the other hand has been pod sterile for me for years.
This spring however, it set pods on nearly EVERY flower. I had to stake
the stalk for fear it would break from all the little watermelons it was
trying to produce. Frankly, the stalk looked like a Christmas Tree in
June.
Does anyone have any ideas why fertility varies like this? Not that it's
important, I was just curious. I think it may have something to do with
weather but have no proof.
