OT: AIS Electronic R & I Project

From: "Ian E. & Shirley Efford" <avocet.intl@sympatico.ca>

"Several formats were discussed - rewritable CD, disks."

Although I am not a software expert, I attend meetings on software
devopment, marketing, etc. every week. Almost all the large companies
are moving away from selling information and software in hardcopy.
Software packages costing tens of thousands of dollars are now available
directly into your computer and often self-installing.

The list should be made available on the Internet with a charge for
access to that particular file. It is not only common in the industry,
in government [all Canadian Goverment telephone, fax and organisational
level are available free on-line, which means that the government
telephone book is obsolete] now but also in the botanical horticultural
field. One example handled this way is the journal of the Areae
society, found at:- http://www.ezi-learn.com.au/areae/default.html

The cost of this approach is minimal and the accuracy of the data is
maximal as correction can be made continuously. for those without a
computer, free access to the net is usually available at all libraries,
at least in Canada, and through friends, etc. If demand was high enough
a CD-ROM version might be produced but not diskettes, please, the number
would be about equal to Windows 95 on diskette, about 32, I seem to
remember.

Ian, in Ottawa who sees no reason why volunteer horticultural activities
should not be run as efficiently as businesses.
