In a message dated 98-11-12 04:54:27 EST, you write:
<< There are over 40,000 iris, >>
I'm wondering about numbers.
In the Fall, 1989 issue of ROOTS (p.10) in an article discussing the issues
determining initial preservation goals we find "There are probably 50,000
named varieties of iris now over 30 years old. Each year, five to seven
hundred new historic-to-be irises add to that total."
I appreciate that in both contexts we are probably talking rough figures
intuitively derived rather than actual counts, but does anyone out there
happen to know how many named varieties of irises --not just extant named
irises-- might be in the picture as we approach the end of 1998?
