I have been following this discussion with interest since I
was present at the Board Meeting when this subject came up (it
might have also come up when I was not there - and probably did).
My own $.02:
Frankly, I think the net is *not* the way for AIS to make money
on the registration information. Selling of CD-ROMS or whatever
is the money-maker for us. The net is the avenue to encourage
folks to take an interest in AIS and join, etc.
*NALS (The North American Lily Society) has a master listing of
all lilium registered cultivars free on the net for downloading.
OK, Michael Homick maintains it on his web pages but it is there
for all to see - free of charge.
Now the Index is/will be completed, put the darn thing on the
AIS web page OR since it is copyrighted, some techies can
figure out someway to do it legally. The R & I's are floating
around out there after all....
Like the Irisborer, I give Howard Hughes a big pat on the back.
*I strongly agree with Chris H., Walter and John that the
electronic list should be the initial or primary vehicle for
publication.
As an aside, I watched the Board Members closely when this was
being discussed and those that are not on-line sort of glazed
over....too bad...jump over them, they will catch up. If not,
they can always leaf through their checklists. :)
Cheers,
Ellen
