This is a message from our new AIS President, Clarence E. Mahan:
Ellen, Kathy, Anner, Ruth,
A number of people have sent me various iris list comments re the
Electronic
Check List. I much appreciate the input, and it is apparent that there is
great interest in the subject (as I stated at the Board meeting, if you
recall).
If you think appropriate you may pass on a couple of comments from me. I
strongly support an electronic database of information in the AIS Check
Lists.
We are making progress, but there are legitimate concerns. These concerns
are
not about the ability of AIS to make money from Checklists or from R & I
booklets. The only reason we charge for these items is to recoup the cost
of
producing them. The R&I booklets become obsolete as soon as the 10 year
Check
List is produced.
The only reason AIS sells the older Check Lists, e.g. 1939, 49, 59, etc, is
that we opted to reprint them as a service to the members. (Before
several
of us got the Board to effect these reprints, the cost of an older Check
List
was very high, e.g. I had to pay $100 for a 1939 Check List).
There was much debate about correcting errors in old Check Lists before
doing
an electronic check list. I was vehemently opposed to this. As a quality
control over registration data, only the Registrar can correct errors. It
would take ages to get all the so-called errors corrected, and some of the
"errors" would be the subject of much debate and controversy. In short, we
would never get an electronic check list if we began a project to correct
all
the so-called errors. Many of the so-called errors are one person's
opinion.
Some of the "errors" are simply a lack of information.
The primary issues regarding the electronic check list seem to be: 1)
quality
control of the data and 2) the type of software being used. The data must
be
reviewed (edited) to make certain that it agrees with data in the Check
Lists
and R & I's . As to the type of software, well, Howard Hughes has moved
ahead
and made a choice.
Since Howard has done all the work, and no one else has, we will have
Howard's
system. We have agreed to abide by Howard's proposed schedule If it works,
AIS will undoubtedly sanction the result. If it doesn't work, well, that
is
another story. We will not give up on this under any circumstance. And in
any
event, Howard deserves much credit for the vast amount of time and effort
he
has put into this project. I hope this clarifies some of the issues.
The above is a message from Clarence E. Mahan. I hope it answers some of
the questions.
