Hi Talk-ers,

Regarding Thornbird, there has been quite a bit of discussion on it in
the archives and it looks like there will be yet more discussion ahead.
I agree with some of the opinions that Thornbird's form is not quite as
modern as some of the newer cultivars available. And Thornbird's color
is not to my liking. However, I grew Thornbird for a few years and
though I am not a judge, think very highly of it.

1. Grows very well for me, at least 4 increases per rhizome. And
apparently, grows well in other parts of the country.
2. Blooms every year for me and stays up without staking.
3. Disease resistant, rarely rots or spots.
4. Good bud count, at least 8-10 buds per stalk and blooms sequentially
5. Excellent branching, wide enough to hold flowers away from the stalk
and very consisitent from stalk to stalk.
6. Distictive. You could not mistake Thornbird for anything else in your
garden, even at a distance.

So even if Thornbird's color and form is not to my liking, I would grow
it over something like Witch's Wand that has breathtaking flowers but is
a very poor grower, very rotty and spotty, reluctant bloomer etc.

Just the opinions of an Iris Maniac .............
