CULT: TB: Losing the battle? Rot and more

From: Tammy King <tlking@ap.net>

Hello listers~

As the weather here turns colder and wetter, I'm beginning to become a
little panicked, and need a little advice/support.

Last weekend I went out to clean out the iris bed, with a cold, which had
about 3 inches of leaves from our neighbors tree covering everything. I got
all cleared away, including the "gifts" the neighborhood cats had left in
there. Well, that stunt of cleaning the bed in the rain and wind and cold
gave me bronchitis, and I haven't been able to get out there to clean out
the new leaves and kitty gifts, and I won't be able to until the middle of
next week, per doctors orders.

My question is this: will these leaves covering the rhizomes cause rot
within a week or so? I'm so worried that I"m going to lose the whole bed. I
don't have anyone else who I trust to go out there and do the clean up as
the rhizomes have a ton of new babies coming off of them and I don't want
them broken off.

Usually, I'm a risk taker, and would go do it myself, but after waking up
not being able to breath, I don't want to make matters worse.

Sooo, am I in for a big sad surprise when I am finally able to get out
there, or will they be okay for this short duration? The temps are in the
mid 30's at night, and hovering in the high 50's/low 60's during the day,
with minimal sun.

Any help/advice is really appreciated!!
