Great design idea.  A few additional notes: the striping of the pseudacorus
variegata foliage is more yellow than white--thus even more contrast with
bronze cannas or purple shoots of I. xrobusta.  However, there is a
snag--the variegation of the foliage disappears in the summer, so perhaps
the canna foliage would develop too late in most climates to make the
contrast.
