I can tell you that I. Gerald Darby is a lusty grower here in the Buffalo
area.... and the scapes look great (funny.... don't even remember the
flowers).
I had enough increase this year to bring a bushel to my club's sale.
Variegated foliage is one of my loves... and this year, in particular, the
minutea I focused on was stems (petioles in the hosta world). A wonderful
dark petiole yet inexpensive hosta is BETSY KING.... I have a nice row and I
just love that one. There are also a few with red petioles.... one that comes
to mind is KINBA (chartreuse with red petioles).... also REGAL RHUBARB has the
great vase-shape which shows off the red petioles best.
Another dark stemmed plant that I can highly recommend is artemesia
lactefolia.... a tall plant with ferny foliage and BLACK stems.... topped with
white frothy tiny flowers. Very beautiful and non-invasive (unlike some of
the artemesias).
Now you hybridizers out there need to get that black and red into more iris
stems!
