I also followed up with two different county extension agents.....
working form the same school, they gave two different answers:
Agent "A" said.....Definitely will acidify soil, and soften it. Good stuff.
Agent "B" said....Will only minutely affect pH, unless you have
sodic soils as found in the south or southwest, or if it is put on
in HUGE quantities (his ex. was 2" turned into 6" of soil)
He also stated that the softening effect was not that great.
Another marketing ploy to sell useless amendments?
Agent "A" must have cut class on that day. :)
As I said, my experience was that it had little effect on pH. I seem
to have passed the advice from the wrong extension agent on. I
rarely use gypsum, instead incorporating copious amounts of compost.
I wonder what pH indicator paper would show as far as pH change instead of
the simple yes/no of litmus paper? Might be interesting to see.
