Evening all...

Just returned home from a big basketball night way out in western Oklahoma at
Weatherford where our mighty OCU Chiefs rousted the SWOSU Bulldawgs out of
their own dawghouse!!! Our men wallopped 'em something like 94 to 62... So
much for their home court advantage! Best we've beat em out there in years!
At only 4-0 though we have long way to go if we are to bring home one more
National Championship this century... It was sure sweet though for our little
NAIA team to beat an NCAA Div II school like that. Whew! Was it close at the
end though, bench had been cleared & I was afraid Coach was gonna put me in to
keep all the guys from runnin up the score! Our OCU women are 4-0 too as
they beat the #12 team in the nation at home tonight 71-44... No slackers
either!

Can't even begin to tell you how totally thrilled I was tonight in the race
home to change clothes & zoom out for the game. Time was tight & I used my
"alternative" entrance instead of my driveway which makes for an easier quick
exit out onto the busy four lane during rush hour... About the only open
grassy place I have left is the 5 foot wide easement running alongside the 4
lane between the curb & path, then all my "back 40" flower beds start up & you
can barely get a lawnmower through those pathways---let alone a car!

Anyway not having been out back that fer the past few weeks, suffice to say
I'd just been admiring all the mums & glorious salvias from the street in
passing-----what to my wondering eyes should appear?!? R E B L O O M ! ! !
ON AN I R I S !!! And we are not talking any wimpy single bloom here, but
THREE (3) blooms fully open to perfection on nothing less than a SHOW STALK!!!
And with a stalk next to it all budded and ready to take off soon...
Unbelievable! After our heat & drought I never would have thought ANYTHING
would have had the nerve or energy left to do this!

And what was it, you ask??? ORCHID CLOUD... Purplish lavender falls and
white standards... That's it. That's all I can even tell you... Don't even
have it's hybridizer, year of reg or intro, or description-height or anything
else in my iris database list. Am I ungrateful or what? Poor thing doesn't
even have it's own permanent metal marker! Picked it up at the ISD (Iris
Society of Dallas) sale 3 or 4 years ago... Hasn't done anything in the
springs that I can recall, but boy! Is it a showstopper in the fall! Year
before last it started blooming mid September & strutted it's stuff through a
hard freeze & didn't give out til the day after Thanksgiving!

We are en route to our 6th latest freeze date in history folks! And passing
another infrequently visited bed for this time of year I noticed something
strange sticking up from the blossoming red & blue salvias, purple and gold
mums, & various assorted touch-me-nots, cabbage & kale... Tell me... What
can YOU think of that comes in PINK??? Seems to be bulbous... Has two long
floppy leaves towards base that kind of look like tulip leaves... Single stem
looks kinda like a Lycoris shooting up to bloom... Picked a fine time to drop
off the bulb list, didn't I??? Dang it... The bloom or bud on top doesn't
look like it's open yet, but maybe tomorrow... Could it be a Rain Lily???
Does it come in Pink??? I know I had white ones (that never bothered to come
back BTW...) But this is a bright pink!

Have stack of get well wishes to take to Perry Dyer... Thanks! You guys are
great! Keep em comin! And for those of you that don't know who he is:
think AZTEC SUN, a TB, ponder SILENT STRINGS and SOFT SPOKEN, both IB's if I
remember correctly in my weary state, picture WIZARD OF ID an SDB, and for
heaven's sakes! By all means imagine SERENITY PRAYER (has been up for the
Dykes last few!!!) which are just some of his older works that come to mind
off the top of my head... Having gotten caught up with the best of us in the
'90's daylily craze, Perry's bearded hybridizing fell off quite a bit BUT He's
Back!!! And with a vengeance for '99! He's introducing at least 6 new ones!
You all must get in line for his '99 catalog! If none of those great bearded
irises signal a bulb to go off in your brain, he's the immediate past
President (for the past two terms) of SLI, that's the Society for Louisiana
Irises... And in his spare time he.... (Just kidding!)

Speaking of, I am busier than a two tailed cat in a room full of rockers
myself at present & must buzz on! Will check on Perry tomorrow at lunch if I
get back from my City Choir rehearsal in time... With turkey day only 8 short
days away & Christmas on it's heals, time's a wastin! I've gotta finish my
pottin & plantin & get serious about hangin them lights!!! If I'm gonna get
even 15,000 twinkly Christmas lights up this year I am behind schedule
already!!!

Let me know if you all can think of a pink thing-a-ma-jig that could be
bloomin here now... I'd at least like to know what the heck I should call
it!!!

Cheers! Kath in OKC... AIS Region 22, USDA Zone 7 :-)
