AIS: October Bulletin-Some Highlights

From: HIPSource@aol.com

Greetings,

The Bulletin arrived here yesterday and I have been reading it. Mindful of the
observation someone made here about how some bits and scraps might be
appeciated by those who have not received theirs, I have seated myself here at
the computer with it and a cup of my Earl Grey and I will flip through and
emote. Those who prefer surprises will want to go to the next post.

The Editor offers some information about overspraying with herbicides and
suggests that you refrain from using TRIMEC for the nonce. He also asks for
input on the question of whether non-AIS members should be
encouraged/permitted to participate in AIS events. You'll want to read the
particulars before forming an opinion.

Clarence's last column of International News is included and he remarks upon
two recent books on the hybridizer Caparne, gives some information on a
celebration of irises to be held in France in YK , notes some correspondence
with an Iris-list member overseas, and passes on some very interesting and
important information about taxonomic reclassifications he has received from
Anne Blanco White of the UK. It looks like the "lumpers" have prevailed over
the "splitters" and such perennial Iris-list favorites as Belamcanda
chinensis, Hermodactylus tuberosus and Pardanthopsis dichotoma are have now
been readmitted to the Genus Iris. Clarence also includes an iris haiku which
is a bit startling but non-the-less affective.

The Bulletin also contains numerous articles about the Denver Convention, of
course, and a lot of very nice pictures of the displays. I was happy to see
the Baumunk Garden since Lowell is one of the HIPS Commercial Sources and
people tell me he grows a real fine iris. Confirmation is right there in the
picture.

Moving along, we have another article from Clarence--the man has really made
a major contribution to the Bulletin, as well as other publications over the
years and I sure hope he will find time to continue telling us interesting
things now that he is the big cheese. Anyway, this article is on some recent
tall bearded irises which impressed him here and there this year, with some
asides on a truly unusual companion plant. Now, I have found that when
Clarence tells me that something is a fine iris, it is, so I read this one
real closely.

What else is here..aha.. Don Spoon has an article on Ensminger's Rebloomers,
and the lists of iris Award Winners are included--lots of information there--
with a nice centerfold of photographs. And there is an appreciation of the
late Monty Byers, hybridizer of both THORNBIRD and CONJURATION as well as a
whole slew of fabulous irises. The man was a genius, no two ways about it.

The last thing in the Bulletin other than the ads is the minutes of the Board
Meeting in Denver. I always read these carefully and this time especially I
found the rewards worth the effort.

So those are some of the things you have to look forward to. And I'm sure your
Bulletin will be along soon.
