I was looking through my AIS bulletin, reading over all the information
about which cultivars won the awards and honors this year. And I noticed
something rather strange. Why are there no medals for species and
inter-species hybrids. Is this too new a field? Or are there medals but
this information just failed to get published accidentally?
I was excited to see Marvell Gold mentioned, as I bought it this spring not
knowing a darn thing about it and never having seen it in bloom. I was
especially excited because now I'm sure of the spelling. The AIS bulletin
and the nursery I bought it from both spelled it the same way (Marvell
Gold). For those that don't know, it's a naturally occurring yellow
flowered I. fulva, collected, registered, and introduced in recent years.
If there aren't medals for the species and inter-species divisions, who can
I bug at AIS to suggest this to? Because with all the work out there being
done (especially on inter-species stuff) I think those hybridizers (and
collectors) deserve to be noticed too!
