I have consistently (or is it inconsistently?) seen I. tectorum and I.
japonica used interchangeably by mail-order firms especially the large,
general mail-order nurseries so it would not be surprising if the variegatas
were also included.
I have both what I refer to as I. pallida variegata (large fans of green ,
almost blue/green and white foliage with the pale light blue flowers) and an
unknown to me variegated JI. Both keep their variegation throughout the
year. The what I believe to be variegated JI has a deep purple bloom
actually resembling a Dutch Iris though I suspect it is a JI with it's
pendulant form that I can't quite coax big blooms out of . I am hoping
that's because I have been too eager to divide it after also having it in
the wrong place.
I should say they keep their variegation throughout the three growing
seasons here although it is most pronounced in spring and fall (now).
If anyone does know the name of what I believe to be a variegated JI, I'd
greatly appreciate the information (or guess!).
The I. pallida variegata is more compact with both wider fans and wider
variegated "stripes" while the JI is taller but with both thinner fans and
thinner "stripes"

P.S. Most of the larger commercial nurseries don't care what they're called
as long as they can say they're variegated. They love to sell variegated
anything even though I've seen some variegated varieties of flowers that are
about the homeliest plants I've ever seen while in bloom!
