Hi Vince & welcome to Iris-talk:
I've got about 3 acres to play with BUT it's at 7,400' in the foothills
of Colorado & is a boulder & tree-strewn slope (a cliff in places)
dotted with buildings & driveways because we have 3 rentals in addition
to our own small house. The property is south-facing & sunny to a fault,
tho -- sunlight at this altitude is intense & can fry plants. As for
soil, I'm still hoping to make some out of our barely-disintegrated
granite & pine duff. We've only been on this property 17 years so it's
early days yet...
Your 'never mind the house' tickled me. I've only gotten to visit some
serious gardeners in the last couple of years & am amused at how
"ordinary", even dinky, their houses often are. But their GARDENS --
well, another story entirely. As the daughter of an architect, the wife
of a retired carpenter/builder & the one-time office manager of a
construction company, this casualness about houses really surprised me.
Not that our own is a castle, mind you, but I thot I was alone in being
basically indifferent to what I live in, particularly during our
too-short growing season.
My husband & I have been talking about moving to a slightly warmer part
of the state & whenever we go look at property I'm much more interested
in the gardening potential than I am in what the house is like or what
we could build ourselves. House, schmouse -- does the land slope north
or south? From whence come the prevailing winds? Is there any real dirt?
What about water -- you say there's a nice CREEK? I'm sold.
Marte in the mtns Zone 4/Sunset 1 Colorado -- where it's been so warm &
dry lately that it's spooky. Keep thinking I ought to do some watering
but that means I'd have to dig the hoses out from under the house, so...
Only had one notable snow (1') to date this fall. Weird.
