Randy,
I agree with you that BLACKOUT (Luihn, '86) is overall the blackest black
on the market - it is clearly blacker than this year's Dykes winner, HELLO
DARKNESS (Schreiner, '92), and in this area a better grower,too - though HD
has a more "finished" flower and superior branching.
However, if you take a fall petal from its black bitone offspring, BLACK
FALLS (Nebeker, '96) and lay it against a fall petal of Blackout, the
latter will appear deep blue violet by comparison - so there is still room
for improvement on the road to the ultimately black iris.
