Bloom Report

I. unguicularis 'Mary Barnard' has begun to bloom again. The same plant
which produced two blossoms in October is blooming again with one blossom
spent, two blossoms open, and another blossom about to unfurl.

This plant was propagated by division in July 1998 from a one gallon
black plastic pot. The parent clump had been in the pot since 1993, and
it had become pot bound. It was also subjected to a move in 1996 from the
USDA Zone 10 environment of Southern California to the USDA Zone 8
environment here on Puget Sound in Washington. After surviving winter
weather in the pot during 1996-1998, it thrived in the garden soil
through the winter weather of early 1999. Curiously, its better developed
and more favorably located division sibling has not yet bloomed, even
though they are only a few feet apart in the same garden soil.

Temperatures have been in the 34-55 degree F. range, with daily rain and
rain showers for two weeks running now. The soil is glacial till amended
with peat moss for organic enrichment and texture.
