Mirabilis the Monster
If you're in Southern California, Mirabilis can be a true monster in a
plant bed. Since there are no killing frosts, the plant proliferates and
consumes nearly everything in its path. Just think of the BLOB! Hand
weeding of this plant is futile. Digging of this plant is futile. It
simply lives forever, until it is subdued with a nasty herbicide. Then
it soon returns looking for vengeance. It lolls those comely blossoms
around in innocence as its sinister seeds penetrate each nook and cranny
to grow yet antoher enormous tuber in the ground, in the asphalt
driveway, in the foundation, and any other remotely fertile spot. Before
you know it, another carpet of this insidious plant has returned to
reclaim its lost ground. The befuddled and worn gardener may then be
tempted to apply nuclear weaponry to the problem, but this notion must
soon be abandoned when it is realized how radiation may feed and mutate
this monster to even greater proportions.
Now, we could be exagerrating just a little bit...then again, perhaps
not <grin>.
