Relative to the biodegradable "peanuts" (the ones I've seen are really little tubelike things, though solid, and aren't peanut shaped at all) are made of corn starch, which is why they just melt away when wet. Most of the peanuts or other types are made of styrofoam plastic. They are solid white, while the biodegradeables are more creamy and are spongier. For packing, I've never had anything shipped to me in excelsior that didn't arrive in good shape, though it is true that, as Walter noted, one has to be careful to go through it all to be sure you haven't not overlooked a precious rhizome. However, that can happen with other packing materials, too, so it is not a "minus" restricted to excelsior. It seems to me that the key to shipping, regardless of packing material, is that the rhizomes need air, so materials that don't pack down plus enough holes punched in the box are crucial. Actually, I've never had things arrive in bad shape, no matter what the packing material, so I guess I'm blessed more than some of you.
