Hi Donald and Gerry,
Thanks for the feed-back re the shipping and backing procedures we undertake.
Glad to learn that things sent to you both have started to settle down to their new home north of the Equator.
The problems of packing and shipping has been the biggest challenges for us in getting our Louisiana iris to our customers in the USA as fresh as possible. The biggest challenge lies ahead for the rhizomes once they arrive! I am happy to report that on the whole the plants withstand the rigours of the journey plus the reverse of seasons pretty well.
The insecticide aspect of export from Oz is a requirement of our Quarantine Authority and not something that we undertake lightly. We also only ship the biggest and best things in our garden for northern hemisphere destinations and always include generous gifts in case some rhizomes don't make the transition well.
I am happy to report that of the 45+ separate shipments and hundred of rhizomes which have been USA-bound orders since March, 1999 the majority (more than 90%) have been received in good condition, have adapted to the immediate differences in the climate switch (including longer or shorter daylight hours - the major factor) and are growing well.
As part of our sales service we also encourage feedback from customers on how their plants adapt and grow. The sale is only the beginning of our relationships with many customers and I'm pleased to advise that we are all benefiting from the information that is coming back. Much of it will probably be of a surprise to most of you.
For those of you who like to learn about these things you may be interested to learn that Aussie La. iris are currently residing in the challenging climes of WA, NJ, IL, OH, FL, TX, MS, AR, AZ, CA, LA (of course!), NY and MI. I see no common demoninators in climate there, do you?
Cheers for now,
Heather Pryor
