Re: CULT: Displaying Iris blooms

One of the best and nicest ways to keep flowers fresh in a vase is to include a few roses. Roses never rot in a vase and they keep other stems from rotting also. I grew some zinnias this summer. Those I put in water by themselves had to be discarded in less than 24 hours because of the bad smell from rotting foliage. When I added roses, they lasted for three days and the water was still fresh when they were discarded. Iris stems are also protected by roses in the water, and what a beautiful combination irises and roses make. If I were a scientist, I would try to find what substance in rose stems have that antibacterial effect. It might be a new antibiotic.

I'm not sure that this is the correct category, but I'd like to find out how to
treat flower stalks to keep them blooming longer once they are cut. I heard
someone mention Flower Fresh once, but I have not been able to find a store that
  sells it.

I'm so new to Irises that I have not had my first one yet, but I do like to plan
ahead and spring is only 6 months off.
