Excellent! I have been eying this one off for some time in last years
catalogue.
I have CRAZY FOR YOU, but it has one fan, and a bloom stalk coming, and it
doesn't look very well attatched to the soil, so I am worrying about it
blooming out. I might put a rock on it.
I wanted some pollen from it for my SDB's but I think it will be too late. I
might try it on LYRIQUE or SOUL SOUND which bloom later.
>By the way what variety are those irises that are
>often sold as "perrenial irises".
Yes Wendy, I know exactly what you mean. Often seen in nurseries,
Supermarkets, country markets etc. They carry a plastic label with
'perennial iris' across the top, and a picture of a pale purple flower.
The flower is I. unguicularis. (AKA winter iris, AKA I. stylosa by many,
many nursery people still)
The plant is ocassionally I. unguicularis too!
More often than not, the contents of the pot are Pacific Coast Hybrid
seedlings.
Sometimes the label has written on it in black pen across the picture: Iris
innominata, or innominata hybrids.
These little tykes are incredibly hardy in many parts of Victoria, unlike in
many parts of their native America. I have several lovely seedlings in bloom
at present, and lots of fat buds holding surprises. They obviously love
Australia, in fact I sometimes think I can hear them going 'oi oi oi!'
I believe many of the seedlings which find their way to nurseries originate
from the Red Hill iris farm, which also advertises a mail order list. Their
named PCI's are reasonably priced, but I don't know how or when they send
them and what their survival rates are. I think Colleen has some in her
catalogue too.
Both Tempo Two and Rainbow Ridge gave up on selling these by mail order.
I find they grow best from seed, and will happily share some bee pod seeds
with you Wendy, if you wish to grow some.
I will take some photos of my newies and post them as soon as I get the film
developed.
I'm just back from a garden and gallery opening, where my irises will be on
sale in bloom in pots. My cultivar and price list was supposed to be
finished too, for gallery visitors to take, but after spending late into
last night, and all day today editing it, the printer ran out of black ink,
and I had piano students to teach so couldn't go out for more. I will finish
it tomorrow I guess.
Cheers, Jan
