With the TB iris from OZ I have had mixed luck with survival. This
year most of them put up a bloom stock and a few have shown no
increase. In previous years the plants didn't do this and survived
their first winter very well. When I moved them (end of year
two)there
was a lot of fatalities even though I had up to 10 plants of some. I
makes me wonder if perhaps they do better if moved very early in the
season. I planted the ones this year in pots when I received them
which was about 7-10 days after being mailed. The previous order had
been delayed in the mail for about three weeks. This brings me to
another point. Several people have mentioned their treatment method
for Australian iris which I'll share here. One person said they leave
them of the floor of the gagage for about 3-4 weeks after they arrive
before planting them and then leave them out for slightly longer when
they dig them at the time they move them at the end of their first
season. This person claims good success with this method and suspects
that this acclimitazes them to the change of seasons. The second
person idicates that they put them in pots in a cold frame (unheated
greenhouse) for the first year and into the garden in spring one year
after they first arrived.
The delay I had the first time would suggest that the delay before
planting may help place the plant in dormancy and thus delay the
blooming and help it strenghen and reproduce.
Any other thoughts on this?
