I don't consider either of these plants, at least at the generic level, as
particularly precise indicators of climate. Although typically associated
with the warm deserts of the Southwest, I have encountered native
populations of both in Zone 3 climates (Yucca in Wyoming and Cactus in
Alberta), and as you observe, certain forms can thrive in the humid
Southeast provided they receive adequate drainage.
I have grown both in the garden here, but Carolyn made me take the Cacti
out as she did not like to encounter them when weeding.
