Re: Re: CULT: compost tonnes vs volume

My trailer measures 6'X4'X12"deep.
It can carry 2/3 cubic metre of mulch, potting soil, gravel etc.
1 cubic metre = 1 tonne supposedly, but these things all have different
densities.
The scooper upper thingy that they use in the yard can load 1/3 cubic metre
per scoop full. When loaded the stuff will be slightly heaped above the
sides of the trailer, depending on how mean or generous the load.

Yard worker 'A' is generous and gives good big scoop fulls. He works Friday
through to Monday.
B gives an average sized scoop and C is a bit on the lousy side.
If I am buying potting soil or mulch, I always visit the yard on weekends
when I know A and B are working but C is not. This way I will get a fair to
large load for the same money.
If I want gravel for my paths, I always buy it mid week, to ensure that my
trailer tyres don't blow out or my car engine expire on the way home.
Cheers Jan
(In Aus, people seem to freely interchange metric and imperial measurements.
You often hear people at the timBer yard asking for, say, a 2 metre length
of 4by2.)
