Re: CULT: compost & dangerous drivers

Just watch out for that overloaded white Toyota pickup truck <g>.  These
guys driving the enormous scooper upper thingies (bulldozer sized), just
LOVE to unload huge amounts of wet compost on the unsuspecting.  They
sell it by the truckload, and like to put a 3/4 ton long bed Ford pickup
truck load in my little bitty short-bed small pickup.  I wound up
unloading a good bit of the wet load before driving out of their yard,
and even then, the mud flaps were dragging every time I hit an uneven
bit of road.  Fortunately only 10 miles from home on rural roads where I
could creep along.

The only warning signs at the place are 'watch for heavy equipment' -
narrow alleyway behind the mushroom factory with semi-tractor trailer
loads of compost going in and out and giant earthmoving equipment
shoving around huge steaming, rotting stacks of straw and other compost
ingredients.  I feel like a midget in my tiny truck.

Yes, John, 1/2 ton is a safe load.  I think most people haul up to 3/4
ton in a half ton truck without much concern for fairly short distances
if the load can be centered in front of the rear wheels and if the tires
can take the load and with heavy duty springs (which I had on my old
Ford).  Hauling heavier loads than that is pretty stupid.

not the first (or last) stupid thing I ever did, and definitely not the
worst - that award goes for not properly tying down hay bales and having
3 of them airfoil off my truck on the interstate, fortunately landing
and bouncing to a stop precisely on the dotted line or the shoulder,
well in front of sparse oncoming traffic.  Brrrr....
