As most things are sold by the 'metre' rather than the tonne, it is not a 
problem here.

Now I'm not certain of myself, but anyway - who says which is the width and 
which the thickness? Is that something to do with the grain. I would have 
thought if you rotated a piece of 4x2 90degrees it would be 2x4.

I was greatly amused when I went to buy the posts for my rose arbour. I 
asked for 3 metres lengths of 4x4 treated pine. The salesman went to great 
lengths to convert the 3 metres to feet and inches, then pulled some timber 
from a bay labeled 10cm x 10cm.
Even more amusing, because when he pulled out his tape measure, it had 
imperial on one side, and metric on the other.
