This is probably late, but I'll send it anyway...
My wife is in the compost/pottingsoil business and they need to pay a fee to
the State based on tonnage. Their rule of thumb is 1 cubic yard of compost
weighs 1000 lbs. Obviously this can vary according to moisture content. A
standard pickup truck with an 8 ft. bed can hold approx. 2 cubic yards of
material(actually 2.37 cu.yds. not counting the wheelwells) if you fill it
completely to the top of the bed. So we are talking about 2000 lbs of
weight. Converted to metric tons it would weigh .9 metric tons. I have a
pretty wimpy 1/2 ton truck and I can haul this amount without a lot of
trouble. Of course sand and gravel are another matter...
