Hi, all,
I too received Blyth's Tempo Two catalog. More promptly than any
U.S. cat! Gorgeous and helpful, I agree. Thanks to the iris gods
for hybridizers who share parentage info! I plan to pass along the
catalog to the garden club here for a hopeful group order.
The prices, much less the Au charges to ship out, are way out of
sight of my budget, but I did what I often do with intros, see who
the parents are and where I might find them for WAY less.
Having originated in Australia, I thought I'd have little luck with
finding Blyth's '90s cultivars here (I have many of his earlier
ones), but lo and behold, many of Blyth's much-used parents are
available from our own iris-talk confreres. ABOUT TOWN (TT price:
$12.50++ is available from Harold's Beautiful View Iris Gardens for
$7. Blythe's much-used IMPRIMIS is $5 from BVIG and $3! from Sutton's.
And of course the USA-originated irises TT carries with those
luscious pics are available here for less. Such as ANSWERED PRAYERS
($26 in TT, $6 from BVIG), ASCENT OF ANGELS ($22.50 TT, $7 BVIG,
$7.50 Aitken's) DEBRENEE ($17.50 TT, $4 Sutton, $3 BVIG), ENHANCEMENT
($20 TT, $6 BVIG and Sutton both), IN REVERSE ($12.50 TT, $4 Sutton
and BVIG), MIND READER ($15 TT, $4 BVIG), PERFECT GIFT ($25 TT,
$12.50 Aitken's), SKYLARK SONG ($22.50 TT, BVIG $6), and STAIRWAY TO
HEAVEN ($17.50 TT, just $3 Sutton and BVIG!)
So while I find the catalog captivating and hope others here are able
to make a group order from Australia, if there are others of you who
are, like me, salivating over the catalog and feeling financially
deprived, despair not: our homies are right on top of the latest
goodies.
I also noted how in-the-minority I apparently am in finding those
rude orange/tangerine beards out of place in delicate pastel irises
and those in a far different blend of colors. Barry Blyth has been a
much-admired hybridizer for me, with his fascinating, subtle blends
of colors. So it's been a mystery to me that he seems to have
intentionally bred that tangerine beard into most everything. But
clearly others are not bothered -- witness the popularity with iris-
talkers of GLITTERATI and WHO'S YOUR DADDY. Red just doesn't belong
with orchids and purples to me, much less "cameo pinks" such as DANCE
FOR US. Takes all kinds.
