Re: CULT: Arils

Dear Bill, I have recently joined this chat line and thought I might reply
to your letter. As I live in South Australia and have been growing arils and
aril hybrids from seed from Israel since 1989 in the open ground
successfully your letter was of interest. I have not heard of van
Bourgondiens but as I wouldn't even think of importing rhizomes into
Australia due to the quarantine restrictions it doesn't surprise me. Where
abouts do you live? We had rain for too long this last winter and spring so
the leaves were disappearing fast, but the rhizomes and flowering didn't
appear to be effected. I recently obtained some large terracotta drainage
pipes through the local council which where somewhat damaged but I thought
it might be fun to pot up some of the arils and compare results. Must go as
I'm preparing for an open garden weekend this week and need all the time I
can get, plus I'm off to New Zealand next week for an iris symposium so I
won't be back til the 16th November. Kind regards, Pat
