Two border bearded irises have really impressed me with their
'redness.'
CRANAPPLE, Aitken, '95 is a vigorous plant with a shade of
red that has great saturation of color. In the soil it has for a home
here, it is neither brown-red nor wine-red. It is the closest to red-
red I have. Cranapple is an apt name.
REVEL IN RED, Spoon, '98 bowled me over last spring. Its
catalog description had not prepared me for the shade of red I saw.
I was stuck in my tracks admiring it. It does not have the depth of
color as CRANAPPLE but it surely was a shade of red I have never
seen in irises before. The tone of red is hard to describe, but I can
assure it is distinctive in the red department.
Neither one of these has those distracting haft marks a lot of
reds have.
