Well, as I understand it, if judges are doing their job, their two most
important responsibilities are to judge irises in the garden and vote
the ballot. Neither of which are based on show bench observations or
qualities of an iris.
Now, that is not necessarily the way judges act, but it is the way they
should. Consider the individual that sees a picture in email of
something they have *never* seen in the garden and writes to the
hybridizer saying they were "going to vote an HC (High Commendation) for
the iris." Clearly an unethical act. IMHO those particular individuals
should be stripped of their credentials. They have no business judging.

I have a lot of the same conflict Arnold. My solution is to try to grow
nice big clumps so I can do a little "cutting for the vase." It enables
me to do they other things I like to do, have some in the house and
share some on the desks at the office where many others can enjoy them.
I do enjoy the revelations " I didn't know irises could look like
that... Are they difficult to grow?"
