I planted some arils (regelias, to be precise) under some mature pine trees
last year in what I presume to be very acid soil, and they grew just fine.
Some sources claim arils require alkaline pH because they occur naturally
in scree hillsides.  But my limited experience indicates that they aren't
pH sensitive after all.

I suppose the best way to really find out is to build a couple raised beds
side-by-side and plant the same cultivars in each to see what happens over
the course of a few years.  Maybe I'll do that next year if I've got the
ambition.
