Dear Dorothy and others, I know I'm getting old(er), but it is always a
shock when i find out that other people are too! Can't believe that you two
are the age you say! And I understand about the weeding. How about trying
the college nearby or H.S.? I was lucky enough to get a graduate student
this summer who was a big help, and intelligent too!!! I was surprised at
the advantage of intelligence in a weeder! She could follow directions, and
even THINK ahead with good ideas! She used working more for activity
outdoors in contrast to a sedentary job of research in the library, etc more
than the money. I pay considerably more than minimum wage. which helps but I
can't kneel anymore, and I'm fighting to keep my garden as therapy vs
"keeping house" . I refuse to be "house proud" as so many of my friends are.
I have a sign that says "God Bless this Mess" and another that says
"Gardening Forever, Housework Whenever" The house is clean, just in a
state of constant reorganization to get rid of all the stuff I saved over the
years!!
As for thistles! I have some, but I don't know whether they are Canadian!
They are persistent, but what annoys me more is the Pokeweed. Early in the
spring, POke is good to eat, like Spinach. During the depression, my husband
and I collected it out in the wilds. But later in the year it grows like
Jack's Beanstalk and has poisonous berries that spread like wildfire. If you
don't get it out when it's young, it becomes almost impossible to dig it out.
And I have a neighbor who should live in an apartment and not where he can
neglect a yard, so his Poke keeps my garden supplied in spite of my
vigilance. Of course, I have cut back so I have about half the number of
irises I used to have, mostly rebloomers, but still nearly 700 with all the
other bearded varieties and a few favorite Siberians, a couple of favorite
JIs and perennials and wildflowers(cultivated) and grasses(maybe they are
"sedges" I'm no expert with them) besides my specimen trees and shrubs to
help with permanent maintenace! I can never decide whether it is better to
weed or mow! And I really can't do either! But us older folks have to keep
moving! Rosalie nr Baltimore zone 7 where we are getting a little rain
