The three options are 1) mail, 2) digest 3) no mail - web access only. If
someone doesn't want a lot of mail to read, #3 is the best option (if they
also have internet access). Whenever I go on a trip, I set most lists to
nomail. Then if I get time and have an internet connection, I can drop in
and see what people are talking about.
I don't like the digest myself because it is much easier to skip messages
that I don't want to read by just deleting them than by scrolling through a
long digest. I hate scrolling. But that's just me.
Unless you are pretty careful about it, it is also easier to reply to a
single message with the correct subject with individual messages too.
