Haven't sent an e-mail in lately 'cause this is "maintenance" season
for iris, not bloom season (apologies to Aussie readers). Every time I go
out to trim the dead leaves and remove the ones with rot at the base, I see
more stalks coming out of Stingray. Not the most modern form; I would have
trashed it long ago except for all those out-of-season 40"+ stalks with 12
to 20 buds each. Four stalks now. Only other activity in the last three
months has been from Mabel Andrews, Plum Wine, and Reincarnation.
My new garden is coming along; I now have almost everything planted
except the iris in pots and newspaper-lined laundry baskets. I am leveling
the planting areas to provide some sort of even irrigation; I will have to
rework the sprinklers also. I love to flood water my iris beds about once a
week in the summer, allowing the soil in direct contract with the rhizomes
to dry out a bit between waterings. The weather has been about 95 degrees
the past two weeks; I dread working in the yard on weekends.
