Ken,

The cultivation guide published by the BIS recommends raised beds with
overhead protection and complete drying-off during July-Oct. Good
ventilation at all times. "Guide to Species Irises" says their habitat is
gravelly steppes and earthy slopes on the edges of cultivated fields and on
mountain plateaus.

Pot-grown seedlings of most species usually require a bit more tender care
than the adults since they simply don't have the reserves to deal with
sudden change or harsh conditions. From the description of care for the
adults, it doesn't sound like they'd do badly in the pots for an extended
period.

My suggestion would be to listen to the seedlings (keep them in their
protected area) but as they gain size, gradually introduce them to longer
periods of bright indirect light before considering direct sunshine.
