Kathy,
I am a little over 100 miles to your north, and am in Zone 8b. Up here,
I have been having luck with some Reblooming Tall Bearded Irises--all
California bred plants. In fact, the results have been encouraging enough
that I have added some more from Sutton's...
I am growing them in large pots, all of them either a light color, or
painted white so that the roots will not get as hot. Also, it appears the
light colored and white pots do not dry out as fast. I do not use any of the
soil for Irises, but I get a very high grade potting mix that is sold at
Dinkin's Service Store in Dunnellon. The Irises do best in a place that gets
light shading on summer afternoons.
You may be too far south, but it is worth a try, but be sure to stick
with rebloomers.
