I will.
Mark asks: "Do you experience many freeze-thaw cycles there?"
Some....the garden has two strongly different microclimates due to
buildings, both degree and direction of slope, and air drainage. In
the cooler, less mild area I had a couple fans of SKYWALKER trying to
walk right out of the ground last winter. I stepped on them,
pressing them back down a couple times...and one even bloomed this
year. The conditions and treatment didn't seem to hurt it a bit.
There were three periods of sufficient freeze in that part of the
garden to penetrate the soil about an inch and a half deep. Ice and
mud columns showed up in a few places--elegant sculptures that melted
quickly in the morning sun.
The milder area where these late planting rhizomes have gone in
rarely freezes hard. The soil is more friable also.
In the past several years we have had one night of five above, with
this last winter having minima a few times in the teens. The long
term history of the area has minima much colder than that, of course,
but with global climate change, who knows? We may be subtropical in
a few more years.
One of the nights this past winter included a nineteen degree frost
in MARCH. We lost quite a few bloomstalks to that one. I may have
to invest in Remay if spring frosts like this continue as a problem.
Mark adds "I would think the pots were froze solid at 12 F with sub-
freezing temperatures for 15 hours last winter."
I would think so! I haven't tried pot culture here before, but I will
be carrying over some siberian seedlings in a pot this year. I think
I will bury it up to its rim as I have done the seed pots just to
give it minimal protection.
