Last year I finished planting mid September and come January the iris
beds looked like 1000 spiders on a hot plate. I know what you mean.
This year I finished before the end of August. Last year I wound up
with 9 pots of iris and another 9 posts various perennials
unplanted. I placed them in the compost pile and covered them up
with about 10" of leaves etc. I think I lost 3 or 4 perennials, the
iris came smiling through.
