Neil,
      That happened frequently when I lived in Lexington, KY, especially when 
there was a major rain even followed by a sudden turn to freezing weather.  
If cold enough, those ice columns would persist a few days.  Labor Day was 
about the latest it was safe to plant up there, but I planted in October once 
with no losses.
