Al,
     When I lived in KY, I had that problem much worse on the southern 
exposure than on the northern side.  I think the north side, even in the sun, 
was flatter, and was less prone to thaw, while the south side faced right 
into the sun.  Even on the typical cloudy days, some of the heat got through.
